What are bearded dragons

Bearded dragons are a type of lizard that are popular as pets due to their calm nature, easy care, and unique appearance.

Why are bearded dragons easy to take care of

  • Bearded dragons are docile and usually enjoy human interaction.
  • They rarely bite and are easy to handle, making them great for beginners.They eat a variety of foods: insects, veggies, and fruits.
  • You don’t need special or expensive food — just things like crickets, mealworms, collard greens, and squash.
  • Feeding them is straightforward, usually once or twice a day depending on age.

What needs to be in the cage

  • Basking lamp (placed on one side)
  • Temp: 100–110°F for basking area
  • Cool side of the tank: 75–85°F
  • Ceramic heat emitter (optional for night heat, no light)  
  • Full-spectrum UVB bulb (T5 HO recommended)
  • Stretches across most of the tank
  • Needed for calcium absorption and preventing Metabolic Bone Disease
  • On for 10–12 hours per day

What for the floor

  • Safe options:
  • Reptile carpet
  • Non-adhesive shelf liner
  • Ceramic tile
  • Avoid:
  • Loose sand (especially for babies — risk of impaction)
  • Wood chips or bark

Food, water, calcium and, cleaning tools

  • Shallow water dish (optional — many beardies prefer getting water from food or misting)
  • Feeding dish for veggies and insects 
  • Calcium powder with D3 (sprinkled on insects 3–5x/week)
  • Multivitamin supplement 1–2x/week 
  • Spot-cleaning tools (scoop, paper towels)
  • Safe reptile disinfectant (like chlorhexidine or veterinary-grade cleaner)
